WW Acts as Special AG to Obtain $12 million Settlement with Visa/Mastercard

WW is pleased to announce the preliminary approval of a $12.1 million settlement with Visa USA, Inc. and MasterCard International that will provide substantial benefits to West Virginia consumers. WW acted as Specially-Appointed Attorney General in the case, which was originally filed in 2003. The suit alleges that Visa and MasterCard violated state consumer protection and antitrust laws by forcing merchants to accept both credit and debit cards, rather than only one.

West Virginia's Attorney General Darrell McGraw has indicated that the settlement funds will be placed in trust and used to give West Virginia consumers a tax break through sales-tax holidays. West Virginia's Chief Deputy Attorney General Fran Hughes has said this is the first and only settlement of its type in the nation. Other states have tried similar suits, but the cases have been dismissed.
